NBA Information:
The National Basketball Association, or NBA, is the top-tier men's professional basketball league in North America. Each year, basketball teams in the NBA vie to be the top franchise in the nation, competing for a chance to wield NBA Finals Championship trophy. For the players, winning a championship is like becoming king of the city for a day. Parades light the streets as the entire city rallies around its NBA heroes, and the fame and glory lasts forever.

The NBA was founded in New York City in 1946, and acquired its current name after consolidating with rival National Basketball League. The league's international and team offices are centrally located in New York City, the Association's birthplace. The NBA is currently home to 30 professional basketball franchises that play ball primarily in the United States and Canada. Canada is currently the only international member country of the NBA.

In the early years of the NBA, the Minneapolis Lakers clinched five championship titles between 1949 and 1954. From 1957 until 1969, the Boston Celtics ruled the roost, capturing 11 titles in 13 years. Stopped only in 1958, when the St. Louis Hawks defeated the Celtics, and 1967, when the Philadelphia 76ers were the Eastern Champions to grab the title. The Celtics were dominant during 1960's, going nine seasons straight boasting the best regular season record. Players including Bill Russell, Bob Cousy and Red Auerbach rallied the Celtics to victory for almost a decade.

Another memorable player from this era is Wilt Chamberlain. Chamberlain's claim to NBA history lies in his feats of extreme athleticism and style. Chamberlain holds records for most points scored in a single game (100) and most rebounds in a single game (55).

During the 1970's, the American Basketball Association competed with the NBA by signing several star players. Julius Erving and Moses Malone are two examples. During this decade, the NBA expanded rapidly, adding 9 franchises to the league for a total of 18. In 1979, the NBA borrowed the concept of the 3-point field goal from the ABA, an innovation unseen before the season. The slam dunk was also an innovation conceived by the ABA, and was used to compete with the NBA for marketing presence. The NBA soon adopted both scoring additions, and in 1976, the ABA consolidated with the NBA to form the biggest professional basketball league in the nation.

Since then, stars like Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird revolutionized the game. Their athleticism and agility brought fans to the game from all corners of the sporting world. Today, the NBA is an international phenomenon, and is followed all over the world. The US Olympic basketball team is one of the favorite contenders each Olympics, and is lauded by international fans and US fans alike.
