U2 is one of those rare bands that managed to stay relevant and dominant for over 25 years. Since the release of their first album "Boy" in 1980, U2 has consistently been at the forefront of popular music. Their latest hit album "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" proves that this band can still perform at a peak level. In March of 2005 U2 joined the elite, as they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Old friend and fellow musician Bruce Springsteen had the honor of inducting U2 into the Hall.
U2's journey in North America began modestly with a club performance at Boston's Paradise Rock Club on 11/14/1981. A show that Bono recalls on the concert DVD "Elevation 2001: Live From Boston". On subsequent tours U2's growing success was apparent in the enormity of their tours. By 1987's Joshua Tree tour, U2 tickets were the hottest item around. Gone were the club days of 1981, as U2 tickets were regularly sold out for large stadium shows. In 2005, the demand for U2 tickets was greater than ever. On the first leg of their North American "Vertigo Tour", U2 tickets were sold out in a matter of minutes.
U2's consistent themes of politics and religion can always be found at the base of their music. Although their music style has evolved over the years, they never lost their identity. They remain one of the most active musical acts in the humanitarian and charitable movements of our time. U2 is a long time supporter of both Amnesty International and Greenpeace. The recently conceived "One Campaign" is Bono's attempt to stamp out AIDS and poverty in Africa.
