The Games of the XXX Olympiad are scheduled to begin July 27th, 2012, in London, UK. This will mark the third occasion that London has hosted the Olympics. The first occasion, in 1908, was due to the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, prohibiting Rome from hosting the Games. It was at this Olympics that the length of the marathon was changed from twenty-six miles to twenty-six miles and 385 yards, so that the race would finish in front of the King's box. The second hosting, in 1948, marked the end of a twelve year hiatus due to World War II.

As is customary following a successful bid for Olympics hosting, the United Kingdom has begun construction of a series of venues, to be used in conjunction with existing locations, in which the games will be held. Some of these venues will be temporary, but others are intended to remain as part of what the UK refers to as the "2012 Legacy", an initiative intended to inspire others to take up sports an physical activity as part of a healthier, stronger country.

The Olympic Committee has divided these venues into three areas: the Olympic Zone, the River Zone, and the Central Zone. Outside of London, other venues, such as Tring in Hertfordshire and the Sailing Academy in Dorset, will be used for appropriate events.

The Olympic Zone will house the Olympic Village, and will be the site of the track and field events (at the Olympic Stadium), the aquatic events (at the Aquatics Centre), the track cycling and BMX racing events (at the Velodrome), field hockey (at the Olympic Hockey Centre), and basketball and handball (at their designated arenas).

The main venues of the River Zone will be the ExCeL Exhibition Centre (for judo, boxing, fencing, table tennis, wrestling, and weightlifting), and the O2 Arena (for gymnastics and trampolining). In addition, the existing Greenwich Park will be used for equestrian events, and temporary ranges will be established at the Royal Artillery Barracks (you can read more about official venues at www.tickets.london2012.com).

The Central Zone uses the most established venues of all the zones. Among those to be used are Wembley Stadium (football finals), Wembley Arena (badminton, rhythmic gymnastics), Lord's Cricket Ground (archery), Regent's Park (cycling), Horse Guards Parade (beach volleyball), and Hyde Park (triathlon). In addition, the majority of the marathon will run through the Central Zone, with its start at Tower Bridge.

By necessity, the majority of the sailing, canoeing, and kayaking events will take place outside London, in such locations as Broxbourne, Dorney Lake, and Portland Harbour. In addition, the majority of the football games will be played across the UK, Glasgow, Cardif, Manchester, Newcastle, and Belfast.

Tickets for these events are likely to sell quickly and JiffyTickets.com will have the largest selection of 2012 London Summer Games tickets once they are available!
